VP Technical Report

Greetings ASPE Members,

There is definitely fall in the air and we are continuing to plan for great speakers and subjects to present at our lunch seminars.  Don’t forget, we are now regularly meeting on the second Wednesday of each month so that those who also attend ASHRAE can do so on the third Wednesday.

October Chapter Meeting

Our guest speaker in the month of October is Mike LeMaster from the Seattle Chapter.

Mike LeMaster was a high school teacher for 10 years before entering the stormwater industry in 2000. Since then, Mike has participated in many projects in the water treatment, waterworks, and plumbing industries and has experience bringing new technologies to the marketplace.

Mike holds an MA Ed. in Curriculum Design from Gonzaga University. Mike taught high school and community college for 10 years and has had extensive technical speaking and training experience in the waterworks and plumbing industries since 2000. He lives in the Kirkland, WA area with his wife Yolanda.

Topic: Value Engineering Considerations when it comes to selecting waste and vent pipes
Meeting Learning Objectives

  • Basic material differences between cast iron and plastic pipe.
  • The best piping material for different buildings.
  • Installation methods for cast iron and plastic pipes.
  • Considerations to be made when determining the “value” in value engineering.

I heard recently that the plan review times have significantly reduced which is great news.  And they have updated some of their information at their website.

For work in King County, here are a couple of great resources to see requirements for your plans and additional guidance depending on the market sector you are working in.

Plumbing Plan Review Design Guidance, updated Sept. 8, 2023 (kingcounty.gov)

Plan Review Design Guidance, Schedule "A", updated 8/16/23 (kingcounty.gov)

VP Legislative Report

Hello ASPE Members & Affiliates!

It was nice to see a number of local faces at the Technical Symposium! We had a nice turnout and there were many very informative technical sessions on offer.

Code Adoption News:
-    This probably comes as a surprise to nobody, but the 2021 WA State Codes effective date has been pushed to March 15, 2024. Various groups and committees are still meeting regularly to work out the final details.
-    The 2021 Seattle Codes are still noted as being postponed to “no sooner than early 2024”. Informally, it has been stated by at least one Seattle official that the adoption of the 2021 Seattle codes will not happen until sometime after the 2021 State codes come into effect. There has been no indication yet if the 2021 Seattle Energy Code will be amended in any significant way to align with the revisions slated for the 2021 WA State Energy Code. For updates, check out the Seattle Code Adoption Page.

Plan Review News:
-    Seattle/King County has developed a new commercial plumbing design guidance document that is in effect now. The updated version has been posted online here.
-    Seattle/King County plumbing plan review times are currently 6-8 weeks for new projects.
-    No updates on plan review times or policies for Snohomish County, City of Tacoma, or City of Bellevue.

See you at the next ASPE meeting!

Women of ASPE Report

The core mission of the Women of ASPE (WOA) is to engage, retain and advance women in the plumbing design industry, through education, leadership development, and networking opportunities. All are welcome to join in who support women in the plumbing industry.  Although we are geared toward the female members of ASPE, WOA is open to anyone who wants to participate-and we encourage all to join!

We just finished a successful ASPE Symposium and met a lot of people and got more to sign up and join our WOA group.  We are approximately 600 strong now?  Thanks to the generosity of our sponsor Delta Commercial we were able to send 2 scholarship winners to the Technical Symposium. Ms. Nora Ureche of Milwaukee and Ms. Neda Mizani from Seattle.

Our committee met during the convention and are working on plans for the next year.  Stay tuned for news on our events and opportunities for participating with WOA.

Follow us on Social Media for information and upcoming events.

Corresponding Secretary's Report

October Greetings!

It was great to see many of you at the 2023 ASPE Technical Symposium in Bellevue.  We were honored to be the host chapter for this event and were able to show visitors some of that PNW hospitality.  I hope that everyone who attended from chapters all over the country had a fantastic time and enjoyed the goodies in their welcome gift.  Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time and talents.

I hope to see you all at the October Chapter Meeting.  The topic will be on “Value Engineering Considerations in Plumbing Systems”.  Just remember…we now are meeting on the 2nd Wednesday of the month instead of the 3rd Wednesday.

Happy Halloween!

Until Next Time…
April Ricketts, PE, CPD, LEED AP BD+C
