VP Technical Report

May Greetings!

Thank you all for making last month’s chapter meeting on  “Emergency Water Supplies for Healthcare” by Brian Soderham.”  Although we had a smaller turnout than usual (folks being on spring break), it was a fantastic presentation with lots of great questions and interaction.

This month’s presentation will be on “Code Requirements for Rooftop Equipment and Supports” by David Boudrero with Miro. Here is his bio:

David Boudrero graduated from Utah State University with a master's degree in structural engineering. David received his professional engineering license in 2021 and worked as a consulting structural design engineer prior to moving to MIRO to specialize in rooftop supports. David has been with MIRO Industries for almost 2 years and enjoys the opportunity to educate engineers and rooftop professionals on code requirements for rooftop supports.

This is our last Chapter Meeting of the 2025-26 year. Thank you all for your ideas for meeting speakers and for getting an early start on recommended presentation topics for the 2026-27 year. Thank you also for your continued support of the ASPE Seattle Chapter.

This month is also our chapter elections for 2026-2028 Seattle Chapter Board Members. If you have not expressed an interest in running but are still thinking about it, please feel free to reach out to any of the current Board members so we can get your name on the ballot.

Until Next Time…

VP Legislative Report

Hello ASPE Seattle,

Hope you all have been enjoying the beautiful spring weather lately and getting outside! I was able to attend the Washington Association of Building Officials (WABO) annual meeting a couple of weeks ago. This was an opportunity to converse with building officials from all over the State. It’s always interesting to find out how other jurisdictions handle certain situations, review plans, establish permit fees, etc.. While discussing some upcoming State legislation, there were a few echoes of “thanks Seattle!” when someone wasn’t happy about a certain new law. On the other hand, at least one person genuinely did thank Seattle for having a working template to draw from when the new legislation was crafted. There are pros and cons to being a large city in a semi-rural State. The City of Seattle (and King County more broadly) do have an outsized influence in politics, but that can be a double-edged sword because it also means being the first to experiment with new ideas and figure out what works, often through multiple failed attempts. We should applaud those that have the courage to propose new ideas and follow through on them until they succeed.

Legislative update for the month: Public Health – Seattle/King County (PHSKC) will be hosting an open public meeting on May 7th at 1pm to introduce their code change proposals for the 2024 Seattle Plumbing Code. Code changes can sometimes have unintended consequences if not carefully reviewed from different perspectives, so industry participation is vital. The meeting will be virtual through MS Teams. Here is the meeting link. Hope to see you there!

Women of ASPE Report

May in Seattle finally feels like spring—longer days, a little more sun, and a good excuse to get out and reconnect. Women of ASPE is leaning into that energy, with a focus on building real connections and supporting each other along the way. We’re also teaming up with the Young Engineers of ASPE on a tag-team event that’s currently in the works, which should be a fun way to bring different perspectives together and learn from one another during the summer months. Whether you show up to an event, reach out to someone new, or just take a moment to reset, we’re glad you’re part of this community.
