President's Report

October Greetings!

It was great to see so many of you at our first meeting of the new ASPE year this last month. Aside from a couple of hiccups with the sound system (smile), we had a great presentation and a fantastic turnout. With the September meeting now in the past, the chapter officers are busy preparing for the next upcoming October events starting with:

·        October General Meeting:  We are excited to be holding a joint meeting with ASHRAE Puget Sound Chapter. The challenge has been finding a topic that appeal to both the Plumbing and HVAC folks, but I think we found something that will work out. Please check out the VP Technical’s newsletter article for more information.

·        ASPE Convention and Business Meetings:  The Seattle chapter has a fantastic delegation going out to the ASPE Convention business meetings this October. During these meetings, there will be debates on proposed updates to the ASPE bylaws and elections for the 2026-29 ASPE Society officers. As in years, past, we will be holding a get together dinner during the convention the Saturday evening after the delegate business meetings. This is open for any Seattle chapter members who be in attendance that day.

Beyond October, be on the lookout for information on the November Chapter meeting.  This will  be a Plumbing Engineers Appreciation meeting. We are still working out the details, but the plan is that it will be free to all Seattle chapter ASPE CPDs in good standing. A few ASPE chapters have tried this and had great success. This is our first time trying it in Seattle, but I am sure that it will be a wonderful time for everyone who is able to make it.

Have a wonderful October, enjoy the mild Seattle fall weather, and we are looking forward to seeing you at our next events.

Until Next Time…

VP Technical Report

Hello Seattle ASPE,

The October monthly chapter meeting will be a joint meeting with the local ASHRAE group. In light of that, we have attempted to choose a presentation topic that may be of interest to both groups. The October 21st technical presentation will be: ‘Designing Central Heat Pump Water Heating Systems: Sizing, Storage, Controls and Commissioning’ presented by Albert Rooks with WaterDrop Systems and Tom Murgatroyd with Dynamic H2O. Abbreviated bio’s for both speakers are below:

Albert Rooks is an entrepreneur and industry leader with more than 25 years of experience bringing sustainable, energy-efficient products and construction solutions to the North American market. His work has focused on expanding access to technologies that improve building performance and support a lower-energy future.

Tom Murgatroyd is a mechanical engineer at Dynamic H2O, where he supports core product development, production, and customer applications. He has worked in the heat pump water heater industry since earning his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, cum laude, from Washington State University in 2019.

Discussion topics will include:

  • Explanation of System Architecture
  • Separating Demand from Recovery
  • Using Storage Intentionally
  • Designing for Reliability
  • Planning Controls and Sensing
  • Verifying Performance

Note that registration rates for the October meeting have been temporarily reduced to $40 for all attendees to ensure our friends at ASHRAE are not paying higher rates than ASPE members. ASHRAE attendees will register through the ASPE Seattle website.

It’s likely we’ll have a great turnout in October. Hope to see you there if we don’t see you at the ASPE Convention in OKC first!

Women of ASPE Report

As we head into fall, we’re looking forward to the ASPE Annual Conference coming up in mid-October! I’m excited to connect with other Women of ASPE members from around the country and hear about the events, programs, and ideas that have been successful in their regions. I’m hoping to bring some of those ideas back to Seattle and see what we can incorporate into our own group. We also have some fun events coming up this fall, so I’m looking forward to a great season of getting together, networking, and connecting with everyone!
